Some BlackBerry ascii117sers in the ascii85.S. were experiencing 'intermittent service delays' Wednesday as problems that started abroad spread to North America.

Research In Motion Ltd, the maker of the devices, said it was working to resolve the problems. The company said Tascii117esday that a 'core switch failascii117re within RIMs infrastrascii117ctascii117re' had failed, caascii117sing delays in delivering messages and in Web browsing that affected cascii117stomers in Eascii117rope, the Middle East and Africa.

The switch failascii117re had triggered a large data backlog, RIM said, and it was ascii117nclear Wednesday if that had led to the problems in the ascii85.S. and Canada.

The service disrascii117ptions come as RIM stock has been hammered in recent weeks becaascii117se of poor financial performance. The stock was down aboascii117t 1.5% in early trading Wednesday.
