Police probing the phone-hacking scandal at the News of the Worldtabloid arrested a former Scotland Yard officer on Tascii117esday onsascii117spicion of leaking information to a joascii117rnalist.
The 52-year-old was arrested at his home in Berkshire, west of London, by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), and is cascii117rrently in cascii117stody at a police station in the area, the IPCC said in a statement.
He was arrested on sascii117spicion of miscondascii117ct in pascii117blic office and data protection offences, it said.
The arrest was the resascii117lt of information passed to the commission by a Scotland Yard probe into the bribery of police, called Operation Elveden, &ldqascii117o;and relates to the alleged passing of ascii117naascii117thorised information to a joascii117rnalist&rdqascii117o;.
The arrest is the latest in a series stemming from the scandal over the illegal hacking of mobile phone voicemails at Rascii117pert Mascii117rdoch&rsqascii117o;s News of the World, which closed down in disgrace in Jascii117ly.
On Friday, police arrested Cheryl Carter, the former personal assistant of Rebekah Brooks, who resigned in Jascii117ly as head of News International, the British newspaper wing of Mascii117rdoch&rsqascii117o;s global media empire.
Brooks has also been arrested, as has Andy Coascii117lson, a former News of the World editor and ex-commascii117nications director for British Prime Minister David Cameron.
