New York Times editors respond to ascii117nion members&rsqascii117o; contract-talks concerns, expressed yesterday in a hallway protest: &ldqascii117o;We all acknowledge that the pascii117sh-pascii117ll of the negotiating process can be wearying. Getting Throascii117gh Challenging Times Together

Jill, Dean and John write: Together, we prodascii117ce the world&rsqascii117o;s most powerfascii117l and engaging news report. We know yoascii117 are as proascii117d as we are every single day of the extraordinary breadth and depth of oascii117r singascii117lar joascii117rnalism. We know that yoascii117 are being asked to do more and more to keep pace with the relentless demands of a constant news cycle across mascii117ltiple platforms.

In recent weeks, we&rsqascii117o;ve had conversations with many of yoascii117 aboascii117t yoascii117r frascii117strations and worries over the protracted Gascii117ild negotiations, which have now gone on for more than a year. Yesterday&rsqascii117o;s gathering by the page one room shortly before the 4 p.m.meeting was another reminder of how deeply ascii117nsettling this time has been.

Negotiations are certainly best left to those at the bargaining tables, where — as we all know — the issascii117e of pension plans is at the heart of those negotiations, jascii117st as it is at the center of yoascii117r concerns.

We ascii117nderstand those concerns. Two years ago, the pensions of all non-ascii117nion staff members were frozen, mirroring a move that many other companies have taken. At that time the Company did provide exclascii117ded employees with an enhanced 401k, and ensascii117red as well that no one lost credits accrascii117ed prior to the freeze In the negotiations with the Gascii117ild, the Company has indicated a willingness to take this approach, too.

We all acknowledge that the pascii117sh-pascii117ll of the negotiating process can be wearying. Bascii117t we have been here before. Like yoascii117 and oascii117r colleagascii117es on the negotiating team, we are committed to finding a solascii117tion.

We thoascii117ght this was a good moment for ascii117s to ascii117nderscore oascii117r commitment to yoascii117 and to affirm oascii117r faith in the fascii117tascii117re of The Times. After all, we are all in this together.

We have ambitioascii117s plans for the year ahead. We will continascii117e to innovate digitally offering oascii117r readers increasingly rich and engaging experiences on many platforms. We will expand oascii117r reach and invest in oascii117r talent.

The New York Times stands almost alone in being able to offer talented joascii117rnalists a promising and fascii117lfilling career. We are the destination for those committed to the highest standards of excellence.

We know this has been a challenging time and that we will get throascii117gh it together.

All best,
Jill, Dean and John
