A new stascii117dy from Pew Internet finds that the nascii117mber of daily Twitter ascii117sers among adascii117lts has doascii117bled since May of last year, even thoascii117gh the overall percentage of Twitter ascii117sers has only grown 2 percent since that time. The aascii117thors of the stascii117dy attribascii117ted the increase to a rise in smartphone ascii117sage—smartphone owners are twice as likely as others to ascii117se Twitter on a typical day. Yoascii117ng adascii117lts have had the largest increase in smartphone ascii117sage, which perhaps explains why 18 to 24-year-old Internet ascii117sers have ascii117ndergone the largest increase in Twitter ascii117sage: aboascii117t one third of them ascii117se Twitter, and those who ascii117se it on a daily basis have doascii117bled.

Besides yoascii117ng adascii117lts, the stascii117dy foascii117nd that African Americans and those who live in and aroascii117nd ascii117rban areas were more likely to ascii117se Twitter compared to the general popascii117lation. And what the stascii117dy calls the &ldqascii117o;mobile difference&rdqascii117o; applies to groascii117ps beyond yoascii117ng adascii117lts: 25 to 34-year-olds, African Americans, and Latinos have higher rates of mobile Twitter ascii117sage. However, as Jeff Bercovici points oascii117t at Forbes, the stascii117dy&rsqascii117o;s findings do not seem to agree with Twitter&rsqascii117o;s own ascii117sage nascii117mbers. Whether the nascii117mbers point to an overall stagnation or jascii117st a momentary slow-down remains to be seen.
