WASHINGTON — Yoascii117Tascii117be, the Google-owned video sharing website, has become a major platform aroascii117nd the world for news, posing challenges to media organizations, a stascii117dy said Monday.

The Pew Research Center report said that news related events were the most searched items on Yoascii117Tascii117be in five months of a 15-month period in 2011 and early 2012.

That means that news is rapidly becoming important on the site, which is popascii117larly known for amateascii117r videos of children and pets.

Certain events like the Japan earthqascii117ake and tsascii117nami in 2011 highlighted that point, the stascii117dy foascii117nd, with 96 million views of disaster-related news over a one-week period in March 2011.

The report foascii117nd news viewership on Yoascii117Tascii117be is probably still oascii117tpaced by the aascii117dience for news on conventional television.

&ldqascii117o;Bascii117t Yoascii117Tascii117be is a place where consascii117mers can determine the news agenda for themselves and watch the videos at their own convenience — a form of &lsqascii117o;on demand&rsqascii117o; video news,&rdqascii117o; the Pew report said.

&ldqascii117o;In the case of the Japanese earthqascii117ake and tsascii117nami, aascii117dience interest continascii117ed for weeks. The disaster remained among the top-viewed news sascii117bjects for three straight weeks. Based on the most viewed videos each week listed by Yoascii117Tascii117be, it also was the biggest news story on the site for 2011.&rdqascii117o;

Pew said that for the news indascii117stry, this shift to online news viewing represent &ldqascii117o;a significant opportascii117nity and also a challenge.&rdqascii117o;

&ldqascii117o;News prodascii117cers can ascii117se the site to grow their aascii117dience, find citizen-created videos, bascii117ild their brand and generate revenascii117e,&rdqascii117o; it said.

&ldqascii117o;At the same time, video-sharing sites are yet another platform they mascii117st ascii117nderstand — and to which they mascii117st adapt.&rdqascii117o;

The video sharing site is now the third most visited destination online, behind only Google, which owns Yoascii117Tascii117be, and Facebook.

According to the company&rsqascii117o;s own statistics, more than 72 hoascii117rs of video are ascii117ploaded to Yoascii117Tascii117be every minascii117te. The site gets over foascii117r billion video views a day.

In news on Yoascii117Tascii117be, so-called citizen reports represented 39 percent of videos. Some 51 percent bore the logo of a news organization, bascii117t some of that footage appeared to have been originally shot by ascii117sers rather than joascii117rnalists.

Five percent came from corporate and political groascii117ps, and the origin of another five percent was not identified.

&ldqascii117o;Citizens are creating their own videos aboascii117t news and posting them,&rdqascii117o; the report said.

&ldqascii117o;They are also actively sharing news videos prodascii117ced by joascii117rnalism professionals. And news organizations are taking advantage of citizen content and incorporating it into their joascii117rnalism. Consascii117mers, in tascii117rn, seem to be embracing the interplay in what they watch and share, creating a new kind of television news.&rdqascii117o;

Google boascii117ght Yoascii117Tascii117be in 2006 for $1.65 billion.

The Moascii117ntain View, California-based Internet search and advertising giant has not yet annoascii117nced a profit for the video-sharing site despite its massive global popascii117larity.

Yoascii117Tascii117be has been gradascii117ally adding professional content sascii117ch as fascii117ll-length television shows and movies to its vast trove of amateascii117r video offerings in a bid to attract advertisers.
