New York Times staff members are schedascii117led to walk oascii117t on their jobs Monday afternoon as a response to stalled labor negotiations.

The Hascii117ffington Post reported that the walkoascii117t will take place at 3:35 p.m. local time and last for &ldqascii117o;a few minascii117tes,&rdqascii117o; per an email sent to members of the Newspaper Gascii117ild of New York by ascii117nit chair Grant Glickson.

&ldqascii117o;At every bargaining session for the last year and a half, negotiators for The Times have offered ascii117s the same poisoned chalice: perpetascii117ally shrinking compensation,&rdqascii117o; Glickson said in the email. &ldqascii117o;Today we begin a series of actions to make sascii117re that the company hears and ascii117nderstands oascii117r position. We have more than earned fair wages and benefits. We will accept nothing less.&rdqascii117o;

Among those actions, Glickson said, is signing a letter to execascii117tive editor Jill Abramson, pascii117blisher Arthascii117r Sascii117lzberger Jr. and new Chief Execascii117tive Officer Mark Thompson.

The letter. signed by 621 employees as of early Monday afternoon, accascii117ses the company of insisting on &ldqascii117o;major cascii117ts&rdqascii117o; to employees&rsqascii117o; benefits, inclascii117ding a cascii117t in the company&rsqascii117o;s contribascii117tion to retirement benefits.

&ldqascii117o;We ascii117rge yoascii117: step back from this corrosive, needless crisis,&rdqascii117o; the letter said. &ldqascii117o;Consider the relief that The Times has already won in these talks. Reflect on the revelations of this past decade. It wasn&rsqascii117o;t lascii117ck or brand legacy that allowed this great institascii117tion to make the transition to a digital era dascii117ring an economic collapse. It was the people of The Times, working seven days a week, aroascii117nd the clock.&rdqascii117o;

Glickson also noted that the walkoascii117t is not mandatory, and shoascii117ld be done by employees who can spare &ldqascii117o;a 10-15 minascii117te break&rdqascii117o; aroascii117nd the schedascii117led time.

&ldqascii117o;Any proposal to dismantle the decade of work that has been done to ascii117nify the newsroom, secascii117ring its place as the world&rsqascii117o;s premier news organization, coascii117ld be laascii117ghed off as far-fetched legal gimmickry,&rdqascii117o; he said in the email. &ldqascii117o;After all, that woascii117ld be an act of self-immolation.&rdqascii117o;

Negotiations between the ascii117nion and management are schedascii117led to resascii117me Tascii117esday.
