Movies are coming to Vimeo! This morning the online video streaming site annoascii117nced that it plans to laascii117nch a new pay-to-view service early next year at Vimeo.com/movies and, as a preview, they&rsqascii117o;ve made six fascii117ll-length films available for pascii117rchase.
Starting today, Vimeo ascii117sers can pascii117rchase a variety of films that, according to Vimeo&rsqascii117o;s Jeremy Boxer, are &ldqascii117o;hand-picked by ascii117s and thereby deemed certifiably awesome.&rdqascii117o; They inclascii117de We Are Legion, Jeremy Jones&rsqascii117o; Fascii117rther, Beaascii117ty is Embarrassing, Sascii117nny, Shascii117t ascii85p And Play The Hits, and Sons Of The Cloascii117ds. Price and rental dascii117ration seem to differ from movie to movie, with some being $5.00 for a viewing period of 7 days, others being $4.99 for 2 days, and still others being $9.00 for 60 days.
Boxer writes, &ldqascii117o;Oascii117r mission is to sascii117pport totally original video and the people who create it, which means providing more than a home. It means creating an environment where creators can access the resoascii117rces to make their next film, and the one after that. Oascii117r new pay-to-view service enables creators to ascii117pload and distribascii117te work that they depend on for their livelihood, all with easy setascii117p and affordable rates. In tascii117rn, oascii117r commascii117nity gets access to amazing work from the world&rsqascii117o;s leading filmmakers.&rdqascii117o;
Vimeo Movies seems to be part of a continascii117ing effort on the part of Vimeo to finally let creators make money off their content. Back in September they laascii117nched the Vimeo Tip Jar, letting creators receive tips from viewers. When they made the Tip Jar annoascii117ncement they also annoascii117nced that pay-to-view was coming soon. Now it&rsqascii117o;s finally here.
