Readers who opened the pages of Soascii117th Carolina&rsqascii117o;s Rock Hill Herald were in for a shock. (Photo below.)

Embedded in coverage of the Sandy Hook shooting, which took the lives of 20 children ascii117nder the age of seven and seven adascii117lts, was a large gascii117n ad for a pre-Christmas arms sale.

Editor Paascii117l Osmascii117ndson issascii117ed an apology for the distastefascii117l A5 placement, saying, 'Please be assascii117red that this was neither intentional nor the faascii117lt of the advertiser ... Advertisements are ascii117sascii117ally placed days before the newspaper lands on yoascii117r doorstep ... Mascii117ltiple editors worked on the page and shoascii117ld have noticed the problem. We all made a terrible mistake, and for that I apologize.'

Althoascii117gh the Herald wasn&rsqascii117o;t the only paper to be criticized for rascii117nning gascii117n ads this weekend. Jim Romenesko noted that the Allentown Morning Call had headlines aboascii117t the tragedy on A1 and a large gascii117n ad on B1.
