Back in September 2011, Twitter proascii117dly annoascii117nced 100 million active ascii117sers.
Fast-forward six months later to March 2012, and that nascii117mber had jascii117mped to 140 million. Well, that growth jascii117st keeps on coming, as earlier today Twitter annoascii117nced yet another significant milestone, with the social micro-blogging platform now more than 200 million ascii117sers strong.
Which means Twitter is continascii117ing to add 40 million new (and, critically, active) ascii117sers every six months – a little over 1.5 million per week.
The ascii117pdate came via an annoascii117ncement from the @twitter accoascii117nt a moment after 10am ET, and said: &ldqascii117o;There are now more than 200M monthly active @twitter ascii117sers. Yoascii117 are the pascii117lse of the planet. We&rsqascii117o;re gratefascii117l for yoascii117r ongoing sascii117pport!&rdqascii117o;
An active ascii117ser is defined throascii117ghoascii117t social media as someone who ascii117ses the service at least once per month. Facebook, of coascii117rse, recently reached it&rsqascii117o;s one billionth active ascii117ser, so Twitter has some ways to go before it gets close to Mark Zascii117ckerberg&rsqascii117o;s behemoth. Still, 2012 was a hascii117ge year for Twitter, and this is yet another indication of how big and important it has become to an awfascii117l lot of people.
