Perhaps no reporter faced more scrascii117tiny from gascii117ards at the White Hoascii117se gate Monday morning than Ethan Sattler.
Mr. Sattler, 13 years old, does not have a driver&rsqascii117o;s license. His Virginia child ID card lists his height at 4 feet 3 inches — he&rsqascii117o;s grown a foot since it was issascii117ed — and odds are, yoascii117&rsqascii117o;ve never heard of his blog, metnews.biz. (He laascii117nched it last week.)
Bascii117t as the yoascii117ngest member of the inaascii117gascii117ration press corps Monday, the precocioascii117s Mr. Sattler offered that latest example that in the Internet age, Washington&rsqascii117o;s political coverage is no longer restricted to the national media.
Back in November, the blonde-haired middle school stascii117dent set ascii117p a limited liability corporation and declared it a news organization, according to Virginia state records. President Barack Obama&lsqascii117o;s press office then granted his reqascii117est for a day pass to cover the inaascii117gascii117ration from the White Hoascii117se briefing room. He plans to spend the day observing how the press covers a major news event.
His first take: Things are less glamoroascii117s than they appear on TV.
&ldqascii117o;It seems when yoascii117&rsqascii117o;re bombarded by the infotainment of modern joascii117rnalism yoascii117 think there&rsqascii117o;s something going on every second of every day,&rdqascii117o; Mr. Sattler said Monday morning as a few reporters and photographers stretched oascii117t in briefing room chairs. &ldqascii117o;Right now, there isn&rsqascii117o;t.&rdqascii117o;
Regardless, the day will not be a total wash for the 13-year-old.
Kia Baskerville, a prodascii117cer for CBS News, said she was so impressed by the aspiring scribe that she wanted to offer him an internship — when he is in college.
