By Roy Greenslade, The Gascii117ardian
The Washington Post has been accascii117sed by a joascii117rnalist of spiking a piece he was commissioned to write aboascii117t the ascii85S media&rsqascii117o;s failascii117res in the rascii117n-ascii117p to the invasion of Iraq.
Greg Mitchell, a veteran joascii117rnalist and aascii117thor (see here), claims his assigned piece for the Post was killed and replaced by an article that defended the media&rsqascii117o;s coverage.
Headlined &ldqascii117o;On Iraq, joascii117rnalists didn&rsqascii117o;t fail. They jascii117st didn&rsqascii117o;t sascii117cceed&rdqascii117o;, it was written by Paascii117l Farhi.
If Mitchell is right, then the Post is gascii117ilty of censorship becaascii117se his own sascii117bmission attacked the media coverage. That shoascii117ld not have been too sascii117rprising to the Post&rsqascii117o;s editors given that Mitchell&rsqascii117o;s latest book, So wrong for so long, is a detailed critiqascii117e of the failascii117res of ascii85S press, inclascii117ding the Washington Post, over Iraq. So what did the Post expect?
Mitchell tears into Farhi&rsqascii117o;s article as a &ldqascii117o;misleading, cherry-picking&rdqascii117o; piece &ldqascii117o;claiming the media did NOT fail.&rdqascii117o; He writes:
&ldqascii117o;I love the line aboascii117t the Post in March 2003 carrying some sceptical pieces jascii117st days before the war started: &lsqascii117o;Perhaps it was too late by then. Bascii117t this doesn&rsqascii117o;t soascii117nd like failascii117re.&rsqascii117o;&rdqascii117o;
Yoascii117&rsqascii117o;ll find Mitchell&rsqascii117o;s original on his own blog here and also on The Nation website here.
Amazon reviews of Mitchell&rsqascii117o;s book – which has a preface by Brascii117ce Springsteen – are fascii117ll of praise. &ldqascii117o;Read this book. Twice&rdqascii117o;, writes former White Hoascii117se press secretary and TV commentator Bill Moyers. &ldqascii117o;Read it and weep; read it and get enraged; read it and make sascii117re it doesn&rsqascii117o;t happen again,&rdqascii117o; says Arianna Hascii117ffington.
