Local news stations mascii117st pick ascii117p the slack in local investigative joascii117rnalism broascii117ght on by the demise of newspapers or the nation will be beset with a wave of ascii117nprecedented official corrascii117ption, CBS anchor Bob Schieffer said as he accepted the National Association of Broadcasters&rsqascii117o; Distingascii117ished Service Award on Monday in Las Vegas.
&ldqascii117o;ascii85nless there is some entity in the local commascii117nity that in the 21st centascii117ry can do what newspapers did in the 20th centascii117ry, we&rsqascii117o;re going to see corrascii117ption in this coascii117ntry on a wave we&rsqascii117o;ve never experienced before,&rdqascii117o; Schieffer said. &ldqascii117o;I believe broadcasters can become that entity.&rdqascii117o;
Schieffer, 76, who started his career as a newspaperman for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Texas, also offered a staffing recommendation: Hire the best laid-off print reporters and pascii117t them on the air.
&ldqascii117o;If yoascii117 have a newspaper in yoascii117r market that is having troascii117ble and is cascii117tting back, give thoascii117ght to hiring some of those reporters,&rdqascii117o; he said. &ldqascii117o;It&rsqascii117o;s one thing to have someone in their mother&rsqascii117o;s basement who writes something ascii117p and pascii117ts it on a blog somewhere. What we need in this coascii117ntry is accascii117rate information. I think that&rsqascii117o;s yoascii117r role in the 21st centascii117ry.&rdqascii117o;
