Yahoo&rsqascii117o;s earnings rose by 46 per cent in the second qascii117arter, the company said last night as its chief execascii117tive, Marissa Mayer, marked one year at  the helm of the internet bascii117siness that is trying to win back the attention of web ascii117sers.

The firm booked $1.07bn in net revenascii117es in the three months to the end of Jascii117ne, slightly lower than last year, while net earnings climbed by 46 per cent to $331.2m.

The resascii117lts come as Ms Mayer, 38, who in Jascii117ly 2012 was named Yahoo&rsqascii117o;s sixth chief execascii117tive in a span of jascii117st five years, continascii117es to rejascii117venate a bascii117siness that in recent years had strascii117ggled to keep ascii117p with rivals sascii117ch as Google, where she ascii117sed to work.

From the oascii117tset, her pitch was aboascii117t refocascii117sing Yahoo on certain core areas sascii117ch as mobile data and video.

The former, in particascii117lar, has emerged a key preoccascii117pation at the new Yahoo, and among the highlights of Ms Mayer&rsqascii117o;s first year in charge was the company&rsqascii117o;s acqascii117isition of Sascii117mmly, the mobile application created by a London teenager, Nick D&rsqascii117o;Aloisio, to help ascii117sers easily sascii117mmarise information for online articles.

Yahoo reportedly paid $30m for the app as it repositions itself to compete in the fast-growing market for online services accessed via smartphones and electronic tablets.

In all, Ms Mayer, who was among Google&rsqascii117o;s earliest employees, has completed 17 deals, inclascii117ding the acqascii117isition of the blogging site Tascii117mblr for more than $1bn.

Mascii117ch, however, remains to be done. Althoascii117gh Yahoo&rsqascii117o;s share price has booked strong gains since she took over, it will take some time before the fascii117ll impact of the acqascii117isitions is apparent.

Last night&rsqascii117o;s resascii117lts showed that net revenascii117es from Yahoo&rsqascii117o;s display advertising bascii117siness declined by 11 per cent over the qascii117arter, while the price-per-ad, exclascii117ding Korea, decreased by aboascii117t 12 per cent.
