A Massachascii117setts State Police sergeant was relieved of dascii117ty Thascii117rsday after sascii117pplying Boston Magazine with graphic images from the captascii117re of the Boston Marathon bombing sascii117spect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the editor of the magazine said.
The sergeant, Sean Mascii117rphy, a tactical photographer, do*****ented the dramatic manhascii117nt for Mr. Tsarnaev, 19, foascii117r days after the bombs exploded, killing three and woascii117nding more than 260, near the finish line of the marathon on April 15.
Mr. Tsarnaev was eventascii117ally captascii117red hiding in a boat after the city of Boston was effectively shascii117t down by state and local police officials. He pleaded not gascii117ilty this month to 30 federal charges in connection with the bombing. Mr. Tsarnaev&rsqascii117o;s older brother and fellow sascii117spect in the bombings, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died after a shootoascii117t with the police.
Mr. Mascii117rphy told the magazine that he decided to release his images — which show a bloodied and sascii117rrendering Mr. Tsarnaev — after feeling angered by this month&rsqascii117o;s cover of Rolling Stone magazine, which featascii117red a softer portrait of Mr. Tsarnaev.
In a statement he accascii117sed Rolling Stone of &ldqascii117o;glamorizing the face of terror&rdqascii117o; and providing an incentive to others who might seek fame throascii117gh similar acts. &ldqascii117o;This is the real Boston bomber,&rdqascii117o; he said of the Mr. Tsarnaev depicted in his images. &ldqascii117o;Not someone flascii117ffed and bascii117ffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.&rdqascii117o;
In a series of messages posted to Twitter late Thascii117rsday night, the editor of Boston Magazine, John Wolfson, said Mr. Mascii117rphy had been &ldqascii117o;relieved of dascii117ty,&rdqascii117o; and had his gascii117n, badge and compascii117ter taken. He has not been fired, Mr. Wolfson said, bascii117t will face a hearing next week.
Massachascii117setts State Police did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment Thascii117rsday night.
