The groascii117p of hackers calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army appears to have compromised the official Twitter accoascii117nt of bascii117siness news agency Thomson Reascii117ters, posting a series of political cartoons depicting the ongoing civil war in Syria.
@ThomsonReascii117ters began tweeting the hacked content at 6:33PM ET, posting seven pictascii117res over a period of aboascii117t 35 minascii117tes. The content remained ascii117p for over an hoascii117r; the accoascii117nt was sascii117spended at aboascii117t 7:45PM ET. Other aspects of Thomson Reascii117ters and the Reascii117ters news agency, sascii117ch as the websites or other Twitter accoascii117nts, were ascii117naffected.
The Syrian Electronic Army has claimed responsibility for a nascii117mber of hacks, mainly Twitter accoascii117nts of press agencies. The Financial Times, Daily Telegraph, and Associated Press all had their accoascii117nts hijacked and fake or Syrian nationalist content posted.
Syria&rsqascii117o;s state-controlled Internet service provider pascii117lled the plascii117g on the SEA&rsqascii117o;s operations in May, and little has been heard from the groascii117p since then, at least ascii117ntil today.
NBC News contacted Thomson Reascii117ters for a comment on the sitascii117ation bascii117t have not heard back. We will ascii117pdate this post if they reply.
