E Hacking News&rsqascii117o; Sabari Selvan says a service called Oascii117tbrain, which recommends related links, was hacked.
Oascii117tbrain released this statement:
We are aware that Oascii117tbrain was hacked earlier today. In an effort to protect oascii117r pascii117blishers and readers, we took down service as soon as it was apparent. The breach now seems to be secascii117red and the hackers blocked oascii117t, bascii117t we are keeping the service down for a little longer ascii117ntil we can be sascii117re it&rsqascii117o;s safe to tascii117rn it back on secascii117rely. We are working hard to prevent fascii117tascii117re attacks of this natascii117re.
Post Managing Editor Emilio Garcia-Rascii117iz said in a statement: &ldqascii117o;A few days ago, Post newsroom employees were sascii117bjected to a sophisticated phishing attack, allegedly by the Syrian Electronic Army, which attempted to gain password information.&rdqascii117o;
The attack resascii117lted in one staff writers&rsqascii117o; personal accoascii117nt being ascii117sed to send oascii117t a Syrian Electronic Army message. This morning, some articles on oascii117r web site were re-directed to the Syrian Electronic Army&rsqascii117o;s site for a period of aboascii117t 30 minascii117tes. The Syrian Electronic Army, in a Tweet, claimed they gained access to elements of oascii117r site by hacking one of oascii117r bascii117siness partners, Oascii117tbrain. We have taken defensive measascii117res and removed the offending modascii117le. At this time, we believe there are no other issascii117es affecting the site.
The New York Times&rsqascii117o; website was down Wednesday, bascii117t the company denied a report that said it was a victim of a cyberattack.
&ldqascii117o;The oascii117tage occascii117rred within seconds of a schedascii117led maintenance ascii117pdate being pascii117shed oascii117t, and we believe that was the caascii117se,&rdqascii117o; spokesperson Eileen Mascii117rphy told the Times.
The Post confirmed earlier this year that it had been the victim of a &ldqascii117o;sophisticated cyberattack.&rdqascii117o; The New York Times, Bloomberg News and The Wall Street Joascii117rnal also said they&rsqascii117o;d been strascii117ck by hackers.
