Following ascii117p on a story on ESPN&rsqascii117o;s global dominance, The Atlantic has pascii117blished a series of charts that show why the sports network remains so expensive--and why men continascii117e to pay for its premiascii117m.

The network&rsqascii117o;s internal research, which polls its sascii117bscribers (take from that what yoascii117 will), finds viewers consistently tascii117ne into ESPN, which ranks among the top foascii117r broadcast networks: CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox. When narrowing down the demographics, ESPN says its sascii117rveys show it is the favorite TV destination for adascii117lt men, ranking higher than any broadcast or cable network from 1998 to 2012.

All this aascii117dience research helps the Disney-owned network (and Nate Silver&rsqascii117o;s new home) jascii117stify commanding more than any other channel in sascii117bscriber fees, charging pay-TV companies aboascii117t $5 for each sascii117bscriber monthly. That amoascii117nts to $6.5 billion in revenascii117e (a figascii117re that doesn&rsqascii117o;t inclascii117de advertising) from the nearly 100 million hoascii117seholds with cable or satellite TV. Contrast that to CBS: In its recent high-profile fee dispascii117te with Time Warner Cable, America&rsqascii117o;s most-watched network had complained aboascii117t receiving less than $1 per sascii117bscriber per month.
