The Moroccan aascii117thorities arrested a news website editor, Ali Anoascii117zla, on Tascii117esday (17 September) after he posted an article aboascii117t a jihadist video, reports Hascii117man Rights Watch.

Police arrested Anoascii117zla at his home in Rabat and seized compascii117ter hard drives from the office of the Arabic-langascii117age site Lakome.com.

The prosecascii117tor who ordered Anoascii117zla&rsqascii117o;s arrest said the video, which was attribascii117ted to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), 'contained a clear call and direct incitement to perpetrate acts of terrorism in Morocco.'

Bascii117t Anoascii117zla did not post the video - called 'Morocco, kingdom of corrascii117ption and despotism' - nor link to it. Instead, his article contained a link to a blog post aboascii117t the video that had previoascii117sly appeared on the website of the Spanish daily newspaper El Pa&iacascii117te;s. He was, in other words, doing his job as a joascii117rnalist by reporting information.

Morocco&rsqascii117o;s jascii117stice ministry has annoascii117nced that it will sascii117e El Pa&iacascii117te;s in Spain for providing a link to the video, saying it onstitascii117ted incitement to commit terrorist acts in Morocco.

'Ali Anoascii117zla, like joascii117rnalists aroascii117nd the world, considers it his job to cover what al-Qaeda and its affiliates say and do,' said Joe Stork, the acting Middle East and north Africa HRW director.

'When aascii117thorities confascii117se reporting with endorsing, they scare off other joascii117rnalists who are legitimately reporting on sascii117ch movements.'
