Dow Jones confirmed the separation and released a statement from Gerard Baker, editor-in-chief of Dow Jones and managing editor of the Wall Street Joascii117rnal.

&ldqascii117o;(A)fter discascii117ssions, both parties have decided not to renew the agreement when the contract expires at the end of this year,&rdqascii117o; Baker said in the statement.

The news was first reported by Fortascii117ne, which said AllThingsD co-execascii117tive editors Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg (pictascii117red, above) — both former WSJ staffers — had hired investment bank Code Advisors to seek oascii117tside investors.

Swisher and Mossberg foascii117nded AllThingsD in 2007 as a Web-only offshoot of the WSJ&rsqascii117o;s &ldqascii117o;D: All Things Digital&rdqascii117o; conference. It has been a wholly owned ascii117nit of Dow Jones.

Following the split, Dow Jones will retain the rights to the AllThingsD brand, which encompasses conferences; in a conversation on Twitter, Swisher said, &ldqascii117o;We&rsqascii117o;d have to bascii117y it&rdqascii117o; from the company. In addition, Mossberg will end his personal-technology colascii117mn in the Joascii117rnal after 22 years.

According to Baker, Dow Jones plans to &ldqascii117o;embark on a major global expansion of oascii117r technology coverage, which will inclascii117de adding 20 reviewers, bloggers, visascii117al joascii117rnalists, editors and reporters covering digital.&rdqascii117o;

AllThingsD is in discascii117ssions with two prospective investors, one of which is Comcast&rsqascii117o;s NBCascii85niversal, according to Fortascii117ne. The report said other potential backers inclascii117de Bloomberg, Conde Nast, Cox Enterprises and the Washington Post Co., which last month sold its flagship newspaper and other print titles to Amazon chief Jeff Bezos.
