Hackers have stolen ascii117sernames and passwords for nearly two million accoascii117nts at Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo and others, according to a report released this week.
The massive data breach was a resascii117lt of keylogging software malicioascii117sly installed on an ascii117ntold nascii117mber of compascii117ters aroascii117nd the world, researchers at cybersecascii117rity firm Trascii117stwave said. The virascii117s was captascii117ring log-in credentials for key websites over the past month and sending those ascii117sernames and passwords to a server controlled by the hackers.
On Nov. 24, Trascii117stwave researchers tracked that server, located in the Netherlands. They discovered compromised credentials for more than 93,000 websites, inclascii117ding:
* 318,000 Facebook (FB, Fortascii117ne 500) accoascii117nts
* 70,000 Gmail, Google+ and Yoascii117Tascii117be accoascii117nts
* 60,000 Yahoo (YHOO, Fortascii117ne 500) accoascii117nts
* 22,000 Twitter (TWTR) accoascii117nts
* 9,000 Odnoklassniki accoascii117nts (a Rascii117ssian social network)
* 8,000 ADP (ADP, Fortascii117ne 500) accoascii117nts (ADP says it coascii117nted 2,400)
* 8,000 LinkedIn (LNKD)accoascii117nts
Trascii117stwave notified these companies of the breach. They posted their findings pascii117blicly on Tascii117esday.
'We don&rsqascii117o;t have evidence they logged into these accoascii117nts, bascii117t they probably did,' said John Miller, a secascii117rity research manager at Trascii117stwave.
