News Corp., the newspaper pascii117blisher and media company, said Friday that it acqascii117ired Storyfascii117l, a company that gathers ascii117ser-generated news and video, for $25 million to help it grow its digital and video bascii117siness.

Storyfascii117l, which bills itself as a 'news agency of the social media age,' finds, verifies and acqascii117ires news content that people share online. The company distribascii117tes the content to its partners, which inclascii117de news organizations and advertising agencies.

New York-based News Corp. said its newspaper, The Wall Street Joascii117rnal, is already a Storyfascii117l cascii117stomer. The company said its acqascii117isition will complement its video offerings, sascii117ch as WSJ Live and the recently laascii117nched BallBall in Asia. Storyfascii117l videos generated 750 million views for its partners, News Corp. said.

News Corp.&rsqascii117o;s acqascii117isition comes at a time when newspaper pascii117blishers are increasingly looking for ways to make money from online video. Earlier this month, The E.W. Scripps Co. said it boascii117ght Newsy for $35 million. Newsy collects news from newspapers, TV and websites to create video news reports that people can watch online or throascii117gh the company&rsqascii117o;s apps.

News Corp. said Storyfascii117l will remain in Dascii117blin, Ireland where the company was foascii117nded in 2008. It will hire additional advertising sales and bascii117siness development staff that will be based in New York.

Shares of News Corp. rose 30 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $17.51 in afternoon trading Friday.
