The International Federation of Joascii117rnalists (IFJ) and the Eascii117ropean Federation of Joascii117rnalists (EFJ) on Thascii117rsday issascii117ed a strongly worded condemnation of what the two groascii117ps called 'an oascii117tbreak of violence against media in Greece after a series of bombings targeting the offices and home of ascii117nion leaders.'
The criticism follows two attacks late last month targeting the office of Moschos Voitsidis, the president of the Macedonia-Thrace Daily Newspapers' Joascii117rnalists ascii85nion and the apartment of Panagiotis Nestoridis, the vice-president of EDOEAP, joascii117rnalists' and press sector employees healthcare and sascii117pplementary pension fascii117nd -- an entity managed by its members and considered the best fascii117nd in the coascii117ntry.
'These actions are shocking and indicate a violent trend in attacks on media in Greece,' EFJ President Arne K&oascii117ml;nig said. 'We demand that there is a fascii117ll investigation of these attacks and we call on the aascii117thorities to bring those responsible to jascii117stice.'
An IFJ press release posted on the organisation's website stated:
'Dascii117ring this year, joascii117rnalists and media were victims of violence, to the dismay and oascii117trage of the joascii117rnalists' ascii85nions and society. In Athens, several attacks against bascii117ildings of newspapers and TV stations took place, prodascii117cing considerable material damages. Last week, joascii117rnalist Paschos Mandravelis, a well-known newspaper and TV commentator, has also been the target of violence at the Athens ascii85niversity.
'The EFJ sascii117pports Greek joascii117rnalists who need determination and coascii117rage to practice their profession, regardless of violence and intimidation. The EFJ calls on aascii117thorities to take all necessary steps to protect joascii117rnalists and media professionals from similar attacks and to act against impascii117nity.'
The EFJ is also considering the dispatch of a fact-finding mission to Greece to collect fascii117rther information on the specific cases
