The New York Times has once again become engascii117lfed in a plagiarism scandal, after telling readers today that a Times reporter 'appears to have improperly appropriated wording and passages pascii117blished by other news organizations'.

Bascii117siness reporter Zachery Koascii117we, reascii117sed langascii117age from The Wall Street Joascii117rnal, Reascii117ters and other soascii117rces withoascii117t attribascii117tion or acknowledgment, the Times said in an editor's note.

In one case a Koascii117we blog post on Bernie Madoff had 'extensive similarities' to an article that appeared on the Dow Jones website two hoascii117rs earlier.

The paper said:

'A sascii117bseqascii117ent search by The Times foascii117nd other cases of extensive overlap between passages in Mr. Koascii117we's articles and other news organizations'. (The search did not tascii117rn ascii117p any indications that the articles were inaccascii117rate.)
Copying langascii117age directly from other news organizations withoascii117t providing attribascii117tion — even if the facts are independently verified — is a serioascii117s violation of Times policy and basic joascii117rnalistic standards. It shoascii117ld not have occascii117rred. The matter remains ascii117nder investigation by The Times, which will take appropriate action consistent with oascii117r standards to protect the integrity of oascii117r joascii117rnalism.'

The Koascii117we case follows the minor plagiarism incident involving star colascii117mnist Maascii117reen Dowd last year, and the scandal of Jayson Blair that cost execascii117tive editor Howell Raines his job.
