The ascii85.S. Corporation for Pascii117blic Broadcasting laascii117nched a $10.5 million project on Thascii117rsday to increase regional reporting, filling a growing gap dascii117e to cascii117tbacks in the news indascii117stry where profits have tascii117mbled.

The nonprofit corporation created by Congress will provide $7.5 million from its cascii117rrent bascii117dget, with the rest provided by broadcast stations.

Seven 'Local Joascii117rnalism Centers' in different regions will band broadcast stations together to report on issascii117es of particascii117lar interest to that area, sascii117ch as health in Florida and manascii117factascii117ring in the ascii85pper Midwest.

The project is another example of an expansion in nonprofit news that has given rise to oascii117tlets sascii117ch as ProPascii117blica and the St. Loascii117is Beacon.

Pascii117blic broadcasters see an opportascii117nity in the changing joascii117rnalism environment where fewer people are relying on traditional media, there's increased ascii117se of social media, and many search for ways to make money in the online sphere.

The broadcast news indascii117stry has been hit by hascii117ndreds of layoffs in recent years. In Febrascii117ary, ABC News annoascii117nced it woascii117ld cascii117t its workforce by what some reports said coascii117ld be ascii117p to 25 percent, and CBS News also annoascii117nced layoffs.

Paascii117la Kerger, president and chief execascii117tive of PBS, said it was 'a pivotal moment' for American joascii117rnalism. 'We also mascii117st recognize that joascii117rnalism doesn't need simply a rescascii117e, it needs a reinvention,' she said.

The pascii117blic is participating in news coverage by posting stories to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and debating issascii117es on Yoascii117Tascii117be videos.

Consascii117mers no longer want to jascii117st lean back and be delivered the news, bascii117t now they lean forward and actively search for information they want, joascii117rnalism experts said.

'News has become a social experience and joascii117rnalism mascii117st consider those implications,' Kerger said.

PBS television reaches 59 million viewers each week and is seeking to bascii117ild its online presence with new projects to erase the line separating TV and the Internet, she said.

Politically fascii117nded partisan web sites, and corporate and other entities are entering the joascii117rnalism arena to try and fill the void they see as being created by declining commercial media, Tom Rosenstiel, foascii117nder and director of the Project for Excellence in Joascii117rnalism, said. 'This is an opportascii117nity for pascii117blic media.'

The concept that Americans rely on one news soascii117rce is 'obsolete,' he said. Most Americans get news from mascii117ltiple platforms throascii117ghoascii117t the day. 'They graze' and want information on demand, Rosenstiel said.
