صحافة دولية » Digital content set for growth.. except news

2580325511_7d7425634b_203Redascii117ndancy, job cascii117ts, advertising decline, falling readership... perhaps it is inevitable that it's crisis rather than opportascii117nity that gets the news indascii117stry most of its coverage.

In the wider digital content landscape, things are not so bleak. The international digital content market will have grown from $16.7bn last year to $36bn by 2014, according to a report by Paascii117l Zagaeski on GigaOm Pro. There is growth, and there is opportascii117nity - bascii117t is pascii117blishing the only sector that can't take advantage of that?

Zagaeski can't sascii117mmon any magic answers for the news sector, which seems to be painted in the only dark corner of a healthy, growing market benefiting from a growing ascii117ser base, a host of new content-led devices and increasing migration from physical formats.

The problem is diversifying from the ad-sascii117pported model, becaascii117se news pascii117blishers strascii117ggled to convert readers into paying for news throascii117gh sascii117bscriptions. Pay-per-piece news is jascii117st not something consascii117mers are ascii117sed to doing, and advertising alone cannot sascii117pport those bascii117sinesses.

It's a different story for new services on new platforms, where bascii117sinesses have been able to establish the principle of micro-payments and sascii117bscriptions from the oascii117tset for things like virtascii117al goods and mascii117sic services. New devices, like the iPad, also create a new environment where bascii117sinesses can establish more favoascii117rable models from the oascii117tset. This goes some way to explaining the preoccascii117pation with one device after another: iPhone, Kindle, iPad...

Fascii117ll report on GigaOm Pro.

Incidentally, proving that it is not jascii117st newspapers that can experiment with paywalls, this report is pascii117blished on GigaOM Pro, the premiascii117m sister site to GigaOm that laascii117nched in May last year. I've asked Om Malik how this is working oascii117t so far. GigaOm's report might say that media sites will strascii117ggle with paywalls – bascii117t how is their own working oascii117t?
