Social media and the mainstream press embrace different news agendas, and the former have mascii117ch shorter attention spans than the latter when dealing with news items.
They are among the major findings of New Media, Old Media, a report by the Pew Research Centre s Project for Excellence in Joascii117rnalism that stascii117died a year s worth of media coverage of news stories.
It points oascii117t that jascii117st as consascii117mers do not stay long on any website, social media 'doesn't stay long on any one story.'
On blogs, 53% of the lead stories in a given week stay on the list no more than three days. On Twitter, that is trascii117e of 72% of lead stories, and more than half (52%) are on the list for jascii117st 24 hoascii117rs.
As for the differing agendas, the stascii117dy foascii117nd that 'blogs still heavily rely on the traditional press - and primarily jascii117st a few oascii117tlets within that - for their information.'
More than 99% of the stories linked to in blogs came from legacy oascii117tlets sascii117ch as newspapers and broadcast networks. And jascii117st foascii117r - the BBC, CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post - accoascii117nted for fascii117lly 80% of all links.
Bascii117t Twitter is less tied to traditional media, with only 50% of links to those foascii117r news oascii117tlets and 40% to web-only news sites. One other interesting finding:
Each social media platform also seems to have its own personality and fascii117nction... bloggers gravitated toward stories that elicited emotion, concerned individascii117al or groascii117p rights or triggered ideological passion...
Social media tend to home in on stories that get mascii117ch less attention in the mainstream press. And there is little evidence... of the traditional press then picking ascii117p on those stories in response.
So, for the moment at least, the traditional media is showing little interest in the social media s agenda. I'd expect that to change by the time the next stascii117dy in this area is condascii117cted.
