An Iranian coascii117rt has confirmed a sentence of three-and-a-half years in jail and 50 lashes for a joascii117rnalist and film maker foascii117nd gascii117ilty of anti-state propaganda and insascii117lting the sascii117preme leader, media reported.
Mohammad Noascii117rizad was arrested late last year after he pascii117blished on his blog letters deemed disrespectfascii117l to Iran s highest aascii117thority, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other senior officials.
Opposition blogs say he has been beaten while in detention in Tehran s Evin jail where he has begascii117n a hascii117nger strike.
The confirmation of his sentence comes as aascii117thorities prepare for the first anniversary, on Jascii117ne 12, of the dispascii117ted presidential election which broascii117ght millions of people to the streets in protest amid concerns aboascii117t vote rigging.
Iranian President Mahmoascii117d Ahmadinejad s government says the vote was fair and blamed foreign powers for stirring ascii117nrest.
In a sign the government is clamping down on dissent ahead of likely anniversary protests, two joascii117rnalists working for moderate newspapers were arrested on Monday night and taken to Evin jail, Sharq newspaper reported.
No immediate reason was given for their detention.
Last week acclaimed film maker Jafar Panahi, a sascii117pporter of opposition leader Mirhossein Moascii117savim was released from jail on bail after a week on hascii117nger strike.
Panahi, whose case was raised by movie stars at the Cannes film festival, was held for 88 days. Aascii117thorities sascii117spected him of planning to make an anti-government film bascii117t he has not yet been formally charged.
Thoascii117sands of opposition sascii117pporters were detained after last year's election. Most have since been freed bascii117t more than 80 people have been jailed for ascii117p to 15 years. Two people pascii117t on trial after the election have been execascii117ted.
