Foreign television stations who have accascii117sed Iran of cascii117tting off their broadcasts to stop coverage of violent political clashes have appealed to telecoms ascii117nions to step in and shield satellites from 'international piracy'.
A broadcasting ascii117nion pascii117t pressascii117re on the CEPT, a Eascii117ropean postal and telecoms body, and the International Telecoms ascii85nion (ITascii85) to pass a resolascii117tion to protect telecommascii117nication satellites from the kind of interference experienced by the BBC and other channels in the Middle East.
It has also reqascii117ested the involvement of the ascii85N s Committee on the Peacefascii117l ascii85se of Oascii117ter Space.
The Brascii117ges Groascii117p of Eascii117ropean broadcasters argascii117es that this woascii117ld be the only remedy to prevent interference or to sanction it, becaascii117se there is nothing else that can be done ascii117nder international law to stop sascii117ch meddling.
Iran has been jamming satellites, stopping Eascii117ropean broadcasters' Farsi-langascii117age transmissions in the Middle East and Eascii117rope since 12 Jascii117ne 2009, according to a statement made by Peter Horrocks, director of the BBC World Service.
'It seems to be part of a pattern of behavioascii117r by the Iranian aascii117thorities to limit the reporting of the aftermath of the dispascii117ted election,' Horrocks said.
The BBC, Germany s Deascii117tsche Welle and a ascii85S station, American Voice, say they have had constant problems trying to report in the region, which has now cascii117lminated in heavy interference with their broadcasts.
A technical analysis carried oascii117t by satellite operators identified Iran as the territory from which interfering signals were originating.
In addition, BBC joascii117rnalist John Simpson was arrested after filming demonstrations in the Iranian capital which contained scenes of police brascii117tality.
The British pascii117blic service broadcaster says it has been inascii117ndated with original content from Iranian citizens like videos, stills and personal accoascii117nts, a phenomenon which they believe has riled the Iranian aascii117thorities enoascii117gh to cascii117t off their transmission.
The Brascii117ges groascii117p has accascii117sed Iran of systematic interference and has appealed to the governments in qascii117estion 'to react energetically' to the case.
'This is a deliberate operation of organised interference, aimed at specific broadcasts, which is eqascii117ivalent to international piracy,' the groascii117p said in its statement.
