Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is cutting additional jobs this week, marking the fourth time in a year and a half that the company has had layoffs. News of coming job cuts was first reported by TechFlash yesterday afternoon, and we have confirmed that they indeed are taking place. From the look of comments on the Mini-Microsoft employee blog, it appears that many of the positions are being cut today.

The layoffs are much smaller than those in 2009, when the company cut more than 5,000 positions in total, and also are focused in areas that Microsoft does not believe are strategic priorities, according to a source. That presumably rules out online and mobile, where Microsoft is making big investments. We may get some more color when the company reports its earnings later this month. In the meantime, Microsoft is not commenting.
