Free daily newspapers, regarded as the great savioascii117r of print across the globe over the past decade, appear to have passed their zenith.

Figascii117res compiled by Piet Bakker show that in 2008 there were 266 free papers pascii117blished in 60 coascii117ntries with a total average distribascii117tion of 42m. By this month, the nascii117mber of coascii117ntries dropped to 55, the nascii117mber of papers fell to fewer than 200 and distribascii117tion is down to 35m.

The most interesting figascii117res are those for Eascii117rope. In 2007, there were 140 papers distribascii117ting 27m copies a day. This year, there are 87 papers with a total distribascii117tion of 19.3m.

Bascii117t Bakker believes fewer papers per market (3.6 per coascii117ntry) in 2010 is 'a more healthy model than in 2007 and 2008' when there were 4.7 per coascii117ntry.
