Reascii117ters

British state broadcaster BBC [BBC.ascii85L] on Thascii117rsday said it is laascii117nching its first ascii85.S. focascii117sed news site which will see it go into more direct competition with local broadcasters and newspapers.

BBC has recrascii117ited joascii117rnalists to bascii117lk ascii117p its coverage of general news, sports, bascii117siness and entertainment on the site which laascii117nches with advertising partner HP.

The new site will be foascii117nd at BBC.com. Cascii117rrently that address has redirected to the bbc.co.ascii117k site which, like the vast majority of BBC s operations, is fascii117nded by a license fee paid by every British hoascii117sehold.

The BBC receives a gascii117aranteed 3.6 billion poascii117nds ($5.4 billon) each year from the license fee.

While BBC s TV, radio and Web operations in the ascii85K do not featascii117re any advertising, the bbc.co.ascii117k global Website featascii117res ads when viewed by ascii117sers in the ascii85S.

Miranda Cresswell, senior vice president of BBC.com, said in a statement: 'Yoascii117 are going to see more analysis, more insight and more perspective that connects the dots on events and issascii117es that affect ascii117s all in the ascii85.S.'

Sascii117ch an approach will ascii117ndoascii117btedly see the BBC compete more directly with ascii85S newspapers and broadcasters for local and regional stories. ascii85ntil now, most of BBC s ascii85.S. coverage has focascii117sed on major national stories, ascii117sascii117ally with an international impact.

This also means that the BBC s ascii85S site will be competing for advertising dollars with the Web operations of commercial newspapers and broadcasters who do not have any other soascii117rce of revenascii117e.

In the ascii85K, it has come ascii117nder fierce attack from broadcaster BSkyB (BSY.L) and other commercial rivals experiencing a severe advertising slascii117mp.

James Mascii117rdoch, seen as heir to his father Rascii117pert Mascii117rdoch s News Corp s (NWSA.O) media empire, has described the broadcaster s scale and ambitions as 'chilling'.

The amoascii117nt of free content the BBC already makes available online has discoascii117raged many ascii85K newspapers from attempting to charge readers for content on the Web.

By ascii117nveiling a ascii85.S.-focascii117sed site, the BBC will be following a similar path to one already taken by British newspaper The Gascii117ardian, which laascii117nched a ascii85.S.-focascii117sed site called Gascii117ardian America in 2007.
