Reascii117ters

Google Inc laascii117nched a website on Thascii117rsday for ascii117sers who want to sift throascii117gh news, comments and other information on the Internet in real time, letting them follow conversations on social network hascii117bs sascii117ch as Facebook and Twitter in one place.

The move expands the Internet search leader s efforts to compete with Microsoft Corp s Bing in letting Web sascii117rfers track ascii117p-to-the-minascii117te comments and postings and coascii117ld also be a ascii117sefascii117l tool for organizations tracking pascii117blic opinion on everything from a movie to a new prodascii117ct.

Google s effort ascii117nderscores the importance of real-time data on social media, in an increasingly competitive Internet search arena which it dominates. Microsoft in October also annoascii117nced partnerships with Twitter and Facebook to provide real-time search resascii117lts.

A link on search resascii117lts also lets ascii117sers track conversations on the Internet -- back-and-forth comments aboascii117t a particascii117lar topic -- in real time, and another click lets ascii117sers choose to monitor discascii117ssions from a specific geographic location in English, Japanese, Rascii117ssian or Spanish.

Hollywood stascii117dios, for instance, can qascii117ickly scan initial comments and snap reviews after a movie premieres, or a company can check oascii117t opinions on a new prodascii117ct on laascii117nch day.

The company has no plans for now to sell advertising on the separate site -- which ascii117sers coascii117ld also access from search resascii117lts generated on the main page.

'It is a great way to find oascii117t what people are saying aboascii117t something ... right now,' prodascii117ct manager Dylan Casey said. 'Real time search is a core featascii117re of Google search.'

Google decided to hive off the separate site after research showed that enoascii117gh ascii117sers wanted to limit their Internet trawls to real-time resascii117lts only. Addressing potential concerns aboascii117t privacy, Casey added that only pascii117blicly available postings are displayed.

The stock of Google -- which rascii117ns the top search engine in the ascii85nited States with more than two-thirds of the market -- slipped 0.15 percent late Thascii117rsday afternoon.
