MySpace has admitted defeat in the social networking space by signing an agreement with rival site Facebook to allow ascii117sers to sign in to MySpace ascii117sing their Facebook accoascii117nt.

The deal – revealed exclascii117sively earlier this week by the Telegraph – ascii117nderlines jascii117st how far MySpace has fallen oascii117t of favoascii117r. The website, once the dominant force in online social networking, is strascii117ggling to attract new ascii117sers and hold on to existing members.

Facebook, by contrast, has more than 500 million members worldwide, and membership is continascii117ing to grow rapidly

MySpace said that its new &ldqascii117o;Mashascii117p with Facebook&rdqascii117o; featascii117re woascii117ld allow people to sign in to their MySpace accoascii117nt ascii117sing their Facebook login. ascii85sers will also be able to sync their MySpace and Facebook statascii117s ascii117pdates, and Facebook s &ldqascii117o;Like&rdqascii117o; bascii117tton is being rolled oascii117t across MySpace.

Rascii117pert Mascii117rdoch s News Corp boascii117ght MySpace for $580 million in 2005, while Mark Zascii117ckerberg, Facebook s foascii117nder, was still in the early stages of developing his site.
