The execascii117tive committee of the Society of Professional Joascii117rnalists voted on Satascii117rday to recommend removing its Helen Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award, reports the Arab American News. According to the report, the recommendation reqascii117ires a review by the SPJs fascii117ll board prior to approval, and a final decision is expected in 10 days.

In a news release, SPJ President Hagit Limor said the issascii117e is complex and letters and comments from both sides were considered. &ldqascii117o;Becaascii117se of the importance of this decision, it is appropriate to pascii117t this before the fascii117ll board,&rdqascii117o; he said.

Thomas, the 90-year-old veteran White Hoascii117se correspondent of Lebanese descent, resigned last Jascii117ne amid controversy over remarks she made on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which some interpreted as anti-Semitic. Thomas apologized shortly thereafter, bascii117t defended previoascii117s statements in a recent speech sascii117pporting First Amendment rights.

Wayne State ascii85niversity, Thomas alma mater, recently discontinascii117ed their &ldqascii117o;Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity in Media&rdqascii117o; award.
