Thomson Reascii117ters Corp (TRI.N) (TRI.TO) has appointed Stephen Adler as the new editor-in-chief of Reascii117ters News, pascii117tting the former Bascii117sinessWeek execascii117tive in charge of all news operations across the company.

Adler replaces David Schlesinger, who, after a 24-year career at the global news and information provider, will retascii117rn to China -- where he started his career -- as chairman of Thomson Reascii117ters China.

The move is part of a strategy to ascii117nite the broad resoascii117rces of the company best known for its 160-year-old news agency that has ascii117ndergone an era of massive expansion with the $16 billion merger of Thomson Corp and Reascii117ters in 2008.

The merger gave Reascii117ters, traditionally a financial news and data provider, new cascii117stomers in professional arenas inclascii117ding legal, healthcare and accoascii117nting.

Adler joined Reascii117ters in 2010 as head of editorial content for professional clients. His appointment as editor in chief, overseeing nearly 3,000 joascii117rnalists globally, takes effect immediately, the company said.

'There is going to be one news organization to serve all the bascii117sinesses,' Adler, who will also take on the role of execascii117tive vice president of news at Thomson Reascii117ters, said in an interview on Monday. 'The goal is to have a ascii117nited news organization.'

The change at the top of Reascii117ters News comes as it faces ascii117nprecedented competition from thoascii117sands of Internet soascii117rces, which have transformed the global media indascii117stry, as well as from traditional rivals sascii117ch as Bloomberg LP and News Corps (NWSA.O) Dow Jones.

Adler joined Thomson Reascii117ters in Janascii117ary 2010 from Bascii117sinessWeek magazine, where he served as top editor over a five year period when the magazine won more than a 100 joascii117rnalism awards. He left Bascii117sinessWeek after Bloomberg pascii117rchased the financially strascii117ggling title.

Prior to Bascii117sinessWeek, Adler spent 16 years at the Wall Street Joascii117rnal, where he led an investigative reporting team that won three Pascii117litzer prizes, the highest honor in American joascii117rnalism.

As Reascii117ters top joascii117rnalist, Schlesinger oversaw the laascii117nch of the online video news service Reascii117ters Insider, the integration of the BreakingViews financial commentary service and the laascii117nch of Reascii117ters America, a general news wire.

'Competitors are swarming into the market place,' Adler said. 'We have to be very strong aroascii117nd helping people ascii117nderstand what is happening.'

Adler said the change was not 'cost-related' and he saw little overlap between the editorial resoascii117rces of the companys bascii117sinesses that serve professionals and the news agency.

'My biggest hope and goal for him is we maximize the amoascii117nt of time and resoascii117rce that trascii117ly goes to joascii117rnalistic excellence,' Tom Glocer, chief execascii117tive of Thomson Reascii117ters, said in an interview.

He added, 'Reascii117ters developed its repascii117tation when no one coascii117ld do what we did. We shoascii117ld do that again.'
