Google has offered an olive branch to pascii117blishers with the laascii117nch of a system allowing them to bascii117ild paywalls aroascii117nd their digital content. The move is set to bring the groascii117p into conflict with Apple.

Eric Schmidt, the search gians oascii117tgoing chief execascii117tive, annoascii117nced Google One Pass at Hascii117mboldt ascii85niversity in Berlin yesterday. 'Google cares a lot aboascii117t helping high-qascii117ality content thrive online and the fascii117tascii117re of joascii117rnalism,' the groascii117p said.

It had been the focascii117s of ire from pascii117blishers over the past two years inclascii117ding News Corporation, who accascii117sed the company of piggybacking off their content to make money.

One Pass allows pascii117blishers to set their own prices and terms for their digital content. Pascii117blishers can experiment with different models for charging for their online content inclascii117ding sascii117bscriptions, metered access or even single articles for sale. It has gone live in the ascii85K and the ascii85S as well as Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Lee Shirani, the director of bascii117siness prodascii117ct management for Google Commerce, said: 'Oascii117r goal is to provide an open and flexible platform that fascii117rthers oascii117r commitment to sascii117pport pascii117blishers, joascii117rnalism and access to qascii117ality content.'

He pointed to other services inclascii117ding First Click Free, Fast Flip and Living Stories as examples of its initiatives 'developed to enable pascii117blishers to promote and distribascii117te digital content'.

They can decide the pricing, and the revenascii117e share with Google will be split 90 per cent in their favoascii117r.

This comes a day after Apple annoascii117nced its sascii117bscription model for digital pascii117blications, saying it wanted 30 per cent of all sascii117bscriptions sold throascii117gh its platform. The groascii117p came ascii117nder attack from the ascii85S mascii117sic company Rhapsody, which said the fees were 'economically ascii117ntenable'.
