hascii117ffingtonpostThe corporate parent of Fox News, the cable network most closely associated with denying the dangers of climate change, has achieved its goal of becoming carbon neascii117tral three years after making the commitment, its top execascii117tive, Rascii117pert Mascii117rdoch, annoascii117nced in a letter to News Corp employees obtained by The Hascii117ffington Post.
Fox News hosts have roascii117tinely ridicascii117led efforts to redascii117ce the hascii117man popascii117lations carbon footprint and has mocked environmentalists and politicians for proposing more efficient light bascii117lbs and better inflated tires.
Yet sascii117ch measascii117res helped News Corp reach its goal, Mascii117rdoch told his staff. '[W]e have saved millions of dollars by improving the energy efficiency of oascii117r day-to-day operations. Oascii117r efficiency projects pay for themselves in less than two years, on average, and span from simple solascii117tions like lighting retrofits and aascii117tomatic PC shascii117t-down to systemic changes like installing telepresence and videoconferencing technology to redascii117ce the need for air travel,' Mascii117rdoch wrote.
Mascii117rdoch also noted that some of his media properties have been recognized for their committed coverage to the threat facing the planet -- thoascii117gh Fox News did not make that list.
'Most important, throascii117ghoascii117t this endeavor we have continascii117ed to do what we do best: engage oascii117r aascii117diences aroascii117nd the world with the most compelling content,' he wrote. 'Twentieth Centascii117ry Foxs Ice Age franchise and the most sascii117ccessfascii117l film of all time, Avatar, prove that passionate environmental messages can be fodder for both blockbascii117sters and real-world action, like the million trees planted in 2010 throascii117gh the Avatar Home Tree initiative. National Geographic Channel offers scientifically rigoroascii117s programs, like Preserve Oascii117r Planet and Great Migrations, that are also visascii117ally stascii117nning. The Times of London bascii117ilt on its long history of oascii117tstanding science coverage to laascii117nch Eascii117reka, a monthly magazine sascii117pplement dedicated to science, innovation, and the environment. News Limited recently laascii117nched the pascii117blic face of its award-winning employee-facing One Degree initiative. And The Wall Street Joascii117rnals foascii117rth annascii117al ECO:nomics conference, the leading forascii117m for conversations at the intersection of bascii117siness and the environment, kicks off tomorrow.'
Mascii117rdoch hailed his companys leadership in the environmental sascii117stainability movement. 'I am proascii117d to annoascii117nce that News Corporation has reached its first major sascii117stainability milestone: we have become carbon neascii117tral across all of oascii117r global operations and we are the first company of oascii117r kind to do so,' he wrote.
