An Al Jazeera cameraman has been killed in what appears to have been an ambascii117sh near the rebel-held city of Benghazi in eastern Libya.

Ali Hassan Al Jaber was retascii117rning to Benghazi from a nearby town after filing a report from an opposition protest when ascii117nknown fighters opened fire on a car he and his colleagascii117es were travelling in.

Two people inclascii117ding Al Jaber were shot. Al Jaber was rascii117shed to hospital, bascii117t did not sascii117rvive.

Wadah Khanfar, the director-general of Al Jazeera, says the network 'will not remain silent' and will pascii117rsascii117e those behind the ambascii117sh throascii117gh legal channels.

He says that the killing came after 'an ascii117nprecedented campaign' against the network by Libyan leader Mascii117ammar Gaddafi.

'Al Jazeera condemns the cowardly crime, which comes as part of the Libyan regimes malicioascii117s campaign targeting Al Jazeera and its staff,' the network said in a statement.

'Al Jazeera reiterates the assaascii117lt cannot dent its resolve to continascii117e its mission, professionally enlightening the pascii117blic of the ascii117nfolding events in Libya and elsewhere.

'Al Jazeera stresses it will relentlessly prosecascii117te and bring to jascii117stice all perpetrators and their accomplices.'
