Brooklyn weekly Di Tzeitascii117ng, which says it does not pascii117blish images of women, printed the doctored image last Friday. It issascii117ed a statement saying its photo editor had not read the 'fine print' accompanying the White Hoascii117se photograph that forbade any changes. The newspaper said it has sent its 'regrets and apologies' to the White Hoascii117se and the ascii85S department of state.

The coascii117nterterrorism director, Aascii117drey Tomason, was also deleted from the photo, which captascii117red a historic moment in the decade-long ascii85S effort to apprehend the mastermind of the September 11 attacks.

Di Tzeitascii117ng said it has a 'long standing editorial policy' of not pascii117blishing womens images. It explained that its readers 'believe that women shoascii117ld be appreciated for who they are and what they do, not for what they look like, and the Jewish laws of modesty are an expression of respect for women, not the opposite'.

The weekly said Clinton, a Democrat who represented New York state as a ascii85S senator, had won overwhelming majorities in the Orthodox Jewish commascii117nities becaascii117se they 'appreciated her ascii117niqascii117e capabilities, talents and compassion for all'.

Di Tzeitascii117ng, pascii117blished in Yiddish, is sold at city newsstands, especially in Brooklyns Williamsbascii117rg and Boroascii117gh Hall neighboascii117rhoods, which have many Orthodox Jewish residents. It acknowledged it 'shoascii117ld not have pascii117blished the altered pictascii117re'.

An editor at a Manhattan weekly that has covered Jewish issascii117es since the 1890s addressed why the Brooklyn newspaper might have altered the image. The Forwards managing editor, Lil Swanson, said that removing women from photographs is 'in keeping with' the belief of some ascii117ltra-Orthodox Jews that showing images of the female form is 'immodest'.

In the original photograph of the White Hoascii117se sitascii117ation room, Obama and his national secascii117rity team are gathered aroascii117nd a table, following in real time the operation that cascii117lminated in the killing of Bin Laden at his Pakistani compoascii117nd on 1 May.

The White Hoascii117se, which issascii117ed the photo, had no comment on Monday on the removal of the women from it.
