The Iranians may be building their own Internet that would further separate Iran from the rest of the world, according to media reports.

Most of the rest of the world – with the exception of some totalitarian regimes such as Cuba – sees the Internet as a global service and uses the worldwide services.

The Iranians are apparently making progress in implementing their Iran-only Internet, according to government statements.

For example, some 60 percent of Iranian homes and businesses will “soon” be on the Iran-only Internet, Reza Bagheri Asl, director of the telecommunication ministrys research institute, said in February, according to The Wall Street Journal. He added that in two years the Iran-only Internet would be expanded to include the rest of the nation.

The Journal speculates that a national Internet in Iran would prevent the onslaught of Western culture and thought coming into Iran. The new Iran-only Internet would comply with Islamic law, The Journal adds. It would also keep out ideas originating from the United States, as well as from other Western nations.

Also, Iran heavily censors its Internet already.

The Iran-only Internet could eventually be expanded to other Islamic nations, The Journal adds.

For starters, there could be two Internets, the Iran-only Internet for most households and the more traditional Internet for businesses, The Journal said. There is an economic risk, however, if Iranian businesses would not be able to communicate with outside nations with whom they currently trade, The Journal adds.

In speculating why Iran may worry about connections to the global Internet, The Journal points out that last year Iran was the target of a “Stuxnet” computer worm. There were reports it was aimed at Irans nuclear reactors, though TMCnet reported last year there was no proof it was developed to target nuclear plants in Iran.

Iranian officials say the Stuxnet worm was unleashed by Israel and the United States.

Iran may also soon introduce its own operating system in instead of using the Windows OS from Microsoft (News - Alert), according to news reports from Iran.

In other recent news, Iran claimed it has started building the first indigenous telecommunications satellite, which is to be launched into space in 2017, according to a report carried by TMCnet.
