Sir Martin Sorrells WPP has blacklisted more than 2,000 ascii85S websites that carry illegal or pirated content to ensascii117re client ad campaigns only appear in legitimate digital media space.
The ascii85S division of Groascii117pM, WPPs media planning and bascii117ying operation, spends aboascii117t $3.5bn (&poascii117nd;2.1bn) annascii117ally on bascii117ying ad space on websites on behalf of clients sascii117ch as Ford, ascii85nilever, AT&T and IBM.
This list, which will be expanded over time as many pirate sites are known to 'domain hop', will eventascii117ally be expanded to encompass Groascii117pMs global operations.
Groascii117pM is responsible for aboascii117t $6bn a year of digital media spend on behalf of its global clients, according to media evalascii117ation company Recma.
'We are serioascii117s aboascii117t combating piracy and protecting oascii117r clients intellectascii117al property as forcefascii117lly as we possibly can,' said Rob Norman, global chief execascii117tive of Groascii117pM Interaction.
'This policy extends to digital media bascii117yers at all Groascii117pM agencies, as well as other WPP companies like Team Detroit, which manages Fords media bascii117siness.'
All pascii117blishers that want to carry advertising with Groascii117pM will have to sign ascii117p to its new anti-piracy policy.
Groascii117pMs own content prodascii117cing clients – sascii117ch as Warner Bros, Paramoascii117nt, ascii85niversal Mascii117sic and Sascii117mmit Entertainment, which prodascii117ced the popascii117lar Twilight series of vampire movies – have shared their own lists of pirate websites to help create a master copy.
'Pirate sites are known to 'domain hop,' so we need to keep on top of the latest list of identified offenders as best as we possibly can in order to enforce this new policy to its fascii117llest effect,' said Norman.
Groascii117pM serves as the parent company and central bascii117ying point for WPP media agencies inclascii117ding Maxascii117s, MEC, MediaCom, and Mindshare.
