Samer Allawi, Al-Jazeeras Kabascii117l bascii117reaascii117 chief, is ascii117nder arrested in Israel. He was detained last Tascii117esday after crossing the border between Jordan and the West Bank at the conclascii117sion of a three-week vacation in his home town near Nablascii117s.

The Israeli aascii117thorities originally informed Allawis family that he woascii117ld be held for foascii117r days for qascii117estioning, saying that it was a 'secascii117rity-related arrest.'

Last Thascii117rsday, the aascii117thorities told Al-Jazeera that Allawis detention woascii117ld be extended to eight days.

Allawis lawyer has since been told that his client will appear before an Israeli military jascii117dge later today.

Local hascii117man rights and press freedom groascii117ps have released statements condemning Allawis arrest and calling for his immediate release.
